Times/circumstances have not allowed closer contact but there is seldom a week that has passed in 50+ years that I, for one, am not reminded of times in M'town and school years with you all.Enjoy...sure it will be applicable as I have applied it, but even more so for your class of 64 day-in, day-out interactions! NEVER FORGET YOUR FRIENDS!

A newlywed young man was sitting on the porch on a hot, humid day, sipping iced tea with his father.

As he talked about adult life, marriage, responsibilities, and obligations, the father thoughtfully stirred the ice cubes in his glass and cast a clear, sober look on his son.

“Never forget your friends,” he advised, “they will become more important as you get older.”

“Regardless of how much you love your family and the children you happen to have, you will always need friends. Remember to go out with them occasionally, do activities with them, call or communicate with them ...”

“What strange advice!” Thought the young man. “I just entered the married world, I am an adult and surely my wife and the family that we will start will be everything I need to make sense of my life.”

Yet he obeyed his father. He kept in touch with his friends and annually increased their number. Over the years, he became aware that his father knew what he was talking about.

Inasmuch as time and nature carry out their designs and mysteries on a man, friends were the bulwarks of his life.

After 60 years of life, here is what he learned:

Time passes.

Life goes on.

Distance separates.

Children grow up and become independent; it breaks the parents' hearts, but the children become separated from the parents.

Jobs come and go..

Illusions, desires, attraction, sex ... weaken.

People do not do what they should do.

The heart breaks.

The parents die

Colleagues forget the favors.

The races are over.

But true friends are always there, no matter how many miles away they are or for how long.

A friend is never more distant than the reach of a need, intervening in your favor, waiting for you with open arms or blessing your life.

When we started this adventure called LIFE, we did not know of the incredible joys or sorrows that were ahead. We did not know how much we would need from each other. Love your parents, take care of your children, and keep a group of good friends..

Oh... you might send this to your friends (even those you seldom see) who help make sense of your life ... I just did...

While he may not win, Ben Carson is definitely our choice... The last thing we want is another politician... and behind all those, hopefully is Donald Trump, What a scary image: Trump sitting at the desk in the Oval Office! Of course, were it possible, I'd be happy to have Ronald Reagan back at the desk... what a president he made!

I am going to an Iowa caucus .

I agree with Franklin Graham, who recenlty said.

"I have no hope in the Democratic party,I have no hope in the Republican party, I have no hope in the tea party or any other party. My hope is in Almighty God and his son Jesus Christ. No political party is going to be able to turn this around. Its is not that the enemy is at the gate, They've come through the gates. We have left the gates wide open and have allowed our moral walls to fall down. America is being stripped of it's biblical heriage and God inspired foundatons"

We have never had such an choice of canidates . We have 2 sitting governors, we have 3 ex governors, we have 2 ex senators ,we have 3 sitting senatore

In addition to that we many never befores. We have never had 2 women running for president before. We have never had a brain surgon running for president before. We have never had the son of a previous president and the brother of a previous president running before. We have never had the wife of a previous president running before. We have never had an avowed soclialist running seriously running for president before. We have never had a female ex C.E.O. of a major corporation running for president before. We have never had a Trump seriously running for president before. We have never had two senators who's fathers escaped from communism in Cuba runnning before. We have never had a serious black republican running for president before. We have never had a person who has argued 9 cases before the suprem court before.We have never has a person openly being investigated by the F.B.I. seriously running for president.

We each have 3 choices facing us.We can not vote as millions choose to do. We can cast our own vote. Or we can cast a ballot in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord, who can only vote through you.

Wow! who would have thought that 50 years would slide by so quickly. I believe the thought was to have another meeting in 5 years seems like a good idea to me just to keep in touch. Was good to see all that were able to make it to the 50th. To each of you I contacted thanks for coming. To all who planned the 50th no matter how small a part you had to pull it off thank you. For thoses who missed the 50th it was a good one, and hope and pray you can come at some point to connect once again. Who knows what the future will bring only God. As we grow older and fewer in numbers just remember you were a part of one of the finest classes in history. Love to you all, and with that I will hold my peace.

Hello class mates!

I thought it might just be time to post a question or two about the 50th class reunion! I know that there are 200 plus of you that look at the 64 web site some not so close to Marshalltown and some right in Marshalltown who are not so active, but that is no reason that you can't post ideas and recomendations for what you would like to do for the 50th era mile stone.

I here a lot of times that the few make all the dissions! Well who ever shows up or makes sugestions happen to be the forum. I try to make as many meetings as I can and am more than happy to represent to the best of my ability those who can not make it. None the less it is the forum who make the desions of which I am only one vote.

Now to the questions!

Do any of you have ideas what you might like to do when you visit for the reunion?

Are you willing to help in planning?

Ok that is my two questions.

I hope to see all that can make it to the 50th. This is one grand milestone.

Adding up memories!

Hello to the class of 64! What class we have! classest folks I know. Well I'm predjest I am guessing. What a second BBQ, Weather didn't cooperate to well, but wasn't to bad, but the flooding was a suprise for some Huh! Joe.

Sure was good to renew with those who were able to make it this time lost some, but gained some new ones. No matter it was a good time anyway. Just to hear the conversation, laughter, hoots was well worth the stay. I don't think we could out guess Iowa weather no matter when we set up the date just an Iowa live with thing. Even though we lost some class that could not make it this year we have seemed to grow a little.

If you don't think it is worth the effort to get togather! I am here to say you are wrong. We all have some class memories of school some good some not so good, and as we grow older and I hope wiser we still build memories. I for one have been looking for the good memories and try to block out the so thought bad ones. You know I am so much happier that way.

We have a lot of good class mates that go the miles extra to make it memorable for all of us. Thanks to all envolved. Vic,Kay ,Jim, Steve, Joe just to name a very few. It take all to get involved to make something work no matter how small you might think the part is, it all make it whole. Success is something with all the parts that can keep things getting better.

Well I don't want to post to much wind. Will leave some room for others to post. Love the get togathers I am able to attend.

Linda -- your wonderful detasseling story resonated with me. I started detasseling the summer I was 12 or 13 and did it for six years: 2 years on a large crew (20 or so girls walking the fields together with lots of laughing and hijinks); 2 years on a machine crew with 5 others, like Linda describes; 2 years solo contracting where I was assigned my own 4 acres and it was my responsibility to get there and get the job done -- on time and on my own any way I could manage. Detasseling is where I heard my first swear words even though I never repeated them, learned a bit about sex (not all correct), laughed a lot, and made precious money to help buy clothes for school. I lied about my height in order to start on a ground crew -- so did many others; there was an exception to the child labor laws that allowed seasonal work for those under age 16. When next I am in the US, I hope to digitize a photo of me and my machine crew from one summer -- we had amazing tans, just as Linda says. When I did solo contracting I had so much more energy than today; at that time I would detassel from 5:00 a.m. to about 1:00 pm (including waking and driving to/from), shower and get to my 3-to-11 p.m. shift as a nurse's aide at the Iowa Soldiers Home, and then go out on a late date! Those were the days. For some years afterwards, one of my recurring nightmares was green, knife-sharp corn leaves on stalks filling my entire visual field while moving past me relentlessly -- shudder. I am not sure that detasseling exists any more -- certainly my non-Iowa friends have difficulty comprehending the job. It was back-breakingly hard, dirty, sweaty labor that reinforced the goal of applying myself at school for a better future. Thanks, again, for sharing these memories.

My Follow Up to Pat Helfer's Story and Intro to Patty Duffs Story

Hello to all my Classmates of 64:

Please allow me to begin by expressing my sincere thank you to Pat Helfer, for offering up her memory story to “Memories Are Made of These”. This unique story explained the after work sequence of events, of how she and the other members of her Gang of 6, planned recreational activities following their kitchen duties at Lloyd’s Restaurant. It seems that all the members of her gang had a very thrilling evening. They were able to meet the night Manager of the Redwood, after he called for Police assistance then raced from his office to make a citizens’ arrest of the legendary Pool Hopping Gang. Then as they stood in their (yet to get wet) swim suits, they were met and questioned by one of Marshalltown’s finest Law Enforcement Officers (Virgil Dye), who specialized in Gang activity. After a prolonged interrogation of all members, Officer Dye exposed certain key facts; one member was on Parole, several other members had been pool hopping many nights before and, one of those hoppers had thrown a chair into the pool, (perhaps as the officer noted) to discourage pool sharks from attacking. Once all the facts were documented into the officers booking report, he decided that none of the members captured, were a threat to Marshalltown residents and were released. Before dispersing from the crime scene, I understand that the Gang was disbanded, and pool hopping would be postponed for a while. Special note; read Pat’s follow up notes to her story on the “Memories Are Made of These” Forum.

Classmates, please remember I may have embellished a wee bit on my interpretation of Pat’s story. There was no gang, and we all knew them as really nice and cool Classmates just trying to relax and enjoy a hot summer evening. Thank you again Pat!
