Paul,

Thank you for starting a discussion of concern for those of us still living in Marshalltown, especially when we have grandchildren in the school system.

I cut out an article earlier in the week because of the statistics. This is not the same Marshalltown we grew up in. The increased poverty level certainly contributes to the discussion. Also the increased numbers of minorities and those with language issues.

Jim and I are enjoying the class dinners. We often discuss how blessed we are to have grown up in Marshalltown and the quality education we received.

Kay

Feb. 8, update: https://www.timesrepublican.com/page/content.detail/id/537143/Board-moves-forward-with-bond-sale.html?nav=5005

From the Feb. 8 T-R article: "The board also agreed to reopen the early retirement incentive window for those teachers and administrators thinking about retiring in June. It was requested to be open again from Superintendent Marvin Wade after it was announced changes will be made at Marshalltown High School after its listing as a low-achieving school."

Draw your own conclusions.

The T-R online articles often have reader comments accessible at the bottom of the article pages. These comments are occasionally informative, and, almost always, entertaining.

It appears the board has made a good choice.

This guy has an inspiring life story. I hope he is able to bring the leadership to MHS that has been sorely needed for many, many years.
