Class of 1964 cookbook
Posted Wednesday, August 4, 2010 02:30 PM

Hi classmates of 64, and especially those who attended the "class Barbie days" from 7/23 thru 7/26.  Can you all recall the CLASS COOKBOOK we discussed and how we can use it to generate funds for all to use for class events?  WEEEEEELL, I have waited for someone to post a possible name for the CLASS OF 64 COOKBOOK and or a recipe for that book! AND guess what, NOTHING!!  SO I will kick this project off by proposing the following names to be entered and considered as a cookbook title and, I would like to post the 1st recipe.

Here are my canidates for our class of 64 cookbook title;

1. "CHEFS of 64"

2.   CLASS OF 64 Oldies

               but

          "GOODIES"

The 1st Recipe:

JIM's BEANS  This is a NO MISS recipe!  great as a side with burgers, steaks or, as a healthy meal by itself.

I have served this many times and with each serving, all ask for the recipe.  Make it yourself and prove me wrong!

In a large skellet, brown 1/2 pound of choice Iowa hamburger and 1/2 pound of choice Iowa bacon. After browning, place the hamburger and bacon in a crock pot.

If you do not have access to Iowa Meats, "I'am Sorry" but you can replace them with the highest quality available, it will still taste GREAT!

Now chop 1 onion (sweet onions are great) and brown in The SAM pan that was used to brown the meat.  After browning add onion to meat in crock pot.

Now add to those goodies in the crock pot, 1 can of BUTTER BEANS, 1 can of PORK AND BEANS, 1 can of KEDNEY BEANS along with 1/2 cup of catsup, 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of vinegar.

Now set the crock pot tempature on low and cook for 64 (6 hours and 4 minutes).  THEN SERVE and ENJOY!

Alright Class of 64 lets get it on!  Use this topic page "CLASS OF 64 COOKBOOK" to submit you canidates for cookbook names and your recipes.

Thanks classmates, NOW LETS GET COOKIN'!!!

Hi Joe,  I haven"t forgot about the cookbook idea and I support it fully.  I would like to come up with a name incorporating the Bobcat theme.  I would like to see the Bobcat head on the cover.   I have a lot of recipies I would  like to contribute.  Just tell me what I need to do  to help get this on the road and I sure hope other classmates will jump  in and get excited about this.  The sooner we get it together and ready to sell the better.  So, any classmates .who read this, please sort through your recipes and get them ready.  I f you decide to have a cook book publishing company do the book.  I have a couple of addresses for companies in Iowa  who do this.   Your classmate Jean Detrich Woolf

I haven't forgotten your idea either. After five days of hanging with classmates, I was pooped! The following weekend was the Relay for Life where I was up ALL night to support my son-in-law. This old lady was pooped again. Now I'm packing to camp at the state fair for two weeks, followed by Labor day weekend, long camping weekend. After that, I'll have time to send you some of our favorite recipes.

Do you want them on this website or your email address?

Jim and I sure enjoyed getting to know you again!

Kay

Sounds like a Great Idea for a Winter project when we can't do anything else except watch the snow fall. I have a lot going on this summer so cook book will be on back burner. Will give it thought and ploting.

I must have missed that part of discussion as I was not able to make all the Cook out events. It was good to see class mates I have not laid eye on for such a long time was great even the small amount of time I had to socialize.

Well I have to close for now I am off to help teach yet another Hunter Education class.

Good Morning Jean, I knew I could count on you to make this wheel turn!  What ever your ideas are on the cookbook, just write them in the 64 cookbook forum so everyone can read them.  When you are ready to show those yummy recipes of yours, just write them in the same forum as if you were telling someone how to make your goodie!  I will start page layouts for each recipe on MS word.  Put in any comments you wish printed along with your name, town and of course, all will show the the MHS class of 64 Pride!  Once we get all the name canidates and recipes from our classmates, we will ALL vote on the best cookbook name (and award prizes) and then vote on the book layout and who will print it.  This will be a book that will make the top 10 best seller list!  Jean, thank you for writing back and it was great seeing and having the best time ever with cool mates like yourself!!!!! Have a super day and keep those creative jucies flowing! Your classmate, joe C

Hi Pam, so good to hear from you, it has been a long time.  I do hope all is well!  I believe that the OLDIES were in part, made up the GOODIES, so I think they should certainly be part of the Cass of 64 Cookbook!  I'am sure you have some good ones which will add to making this Class of 64 Cookbook a collectable!  I look forward to your feedback and your  GOODIE RECIPES!  Your Classmate,  Joe C.

Well Joe don't know if you really want to hear me Jam it up or not! I am kind of an old country boy and like blue grass and country music. I just love to make a joyful noise and a lot think it is just noise. I am still a work in progress and make a lot of mistakes, but have fun doing it.

I was good to see you also my class mate friend and hope we can do it again soon. Being on the fixed income that I am and every one trying to sqeeze the last blood drop out of my retirement income. I am home bound most of time and only have jamming at a few places that I can make.

When Maytag was bought out by Whirlpool who said they would take the retires with the benifit package they had for life. Well that life lasted about a year and I now know that all planns for retirement can change in a heart beat for the worse. Oh well God is in control and some day maybe they will get what they diserve. Getting off my soap box now!

I am guessing you like to cook! I can cook, but like to eat better when others do the cooking. LOL I had to learn my way around the kitchen growing up.

Fellow Classmates:  I am sad to see that not many people have responded to the idea of a Class Cookbook.  With over 80 views and only 9 responses, should that tell me people aren't interested.  I think it is a GREAT IDEA and could possibly help defray some of the costs of the 50th Reunion.  It is just a few short years away.  Time can really fly by, when you're not looking.  So please when you are viewing this part of the website, take time to let us know what you are thinking about the cookbook idea.  In advance, I would like to thank you for your time and input,  Your classmate    Jean Detrich Woolf

Hi Jean!  I just read your posting and like you, I think the Idea of all of us classmates putting our revered recipes and ideas togeather would not only generate some reconnecting in classmate communications but would indeed benefit the entire class in comradery and, perhaps finances for our class to use for social functions like the last BARBIE! It may also generate some nice funds to ADD to those 50th reunion funds!

I have not yet written any notes about the last social we had 3 weeks ago (the Class Barbie). Each day since the conclusion of those wonderful 4 days I have relived them over and over.  I can be doing anything, and a thought will emerge of somthing someone said or did at the cookout or just sitting around the campfire and I will find myself laughing out loud.  People look at me like I'am having a senior moment and, I guess I am.  Those 4 days of reconnecting with wonderful classmates, some I have known for years and others I knew of, but never got to know until 3 weeks ago!  I came to that class function at 65 and when I left, I felt 15 years younger!  And, believe it or not, I still do!  And I know I will continue to feel that way as long as I remember those SO VERY SWEET TIMES!

Sunday night July 25th Kay, Jim and I were sitting on their porch just having a good old time talking about the last few days and, we started discusing ways to generate funds for future get togeathers.  Somthing that would allow any classmate who wanted to come, be able to do so.  It would also pay all expenses for all attending to eat, drink and be merry.  AND, do it all with out using any funds set aside for the big 50th Reunion.  That's when Jim began talking about a cookbooks, and the Class of 64 Cookbook was born!  Now I'am pretty sure that of those attending this last party, they like myself, would want to do it every year from now until we can't!  This was a dream come true for me!  I stepped back in time to the best years of my life with the best people I have know in my life and I will do anythig to enjoy that same wonderful feeling, every year which I have remaining!

They say that laughing is the best possible thing to keep one feeling positive and staying healthly.  So I say to all my CLASSMATES who want to laugh until your jaw hurts and talk until your voice starts to crack, let us come togeather and make this a CLASS COOKBOOK that will be second to none in goodie recipes , cool design and a big seller.  The more we sell the younger we will stay!

If you do not want to post your recipes yourself, just send them to me at jcchilds@cox.net and I will post them for you with any recipe history, comments and credits! I have spoken to many who will be sending me recipes and others who will join in as soon as other ongoing projects end.  REMEMBER, WE ONLY HAVE A LITTLE OVER A YEAR TO GET THIS BOOK COMPLETED AND GENERATING FUNDS so we can meet again in September of 2011 and, grow young togeather again!!!!!  The Class of 64 has always stepped up to the plate and given all we can give, lets keep that tradition going!

If anyone has questions, comments or just want to relive the memories, e-mail me or call me @ 480-730-8137 or 480-907-9920.

Thank all of you for having a hand in making my life great!  Your Classmate, Joe C

PS  Next year LEO will take his jamming gear out of the car and put it to good use!  Get ready LEO!

Good Idea to send recipes to you Joe! If we all post the goodies on the web site all the class could just copy and paste and not be intrested in buying the book. How ever if we have a book full of supprise recipes it would be more marketable. To our class mates as well as those who might be out side of our class who might be intrested.

I have to agree with Jean as I know a lot of class mates look at this site. I have even tried to chat with some. I don't know what it is if they have no time or if they have not truely taken a tour of the site to know what all it has to offer.

I always felt out side of the class in High school, because I felt I did not have something! I stopped steped back got off my high horse and discovered I do have everything to belong, and that is a Love of the class of 1964 with all the good and bad it had to offer. I found out if you do not try to belong you will not belong which is only bad for yourself. We don't all think alike and have the same intrests, but that is what makes life intresting and I believe helps God turn the world.

Sooo! I will copy and paste your address and sent you my recipes direct along with the credit that is due the recipe, meaning if I used my own or barrowed from some one else. Thanks in advance for your work on this and I hope you get swamped with recipes.

Hi to All:  Im sorry I missed the last reunion at Colo a few weeks ago.  Lots of wedding plans going on until late October, and then I will be able to concentrate on something else.

I like the idea of a class cookbook and I will get some recipes together soon and send them to Joe.  I dont do any of the cooking anymore since my husband, Glen,  retired eight years ago from Fisher.  I do love to "read" cookbooks though and I love to eat!!

Those pictures of the guys at the Maid-rite and the actual Maid-rite are cruel and unusual punishment to say the least.   We did find a Maid-rite franchise at the Lake of the Ozarks in a HY-Vee gas station of all places....it is close to those at home, but still not the same.

I will be sending some recipes soon......Sincerely, Susan

Hi Susan, So very nice to hear from you. We are so glad we have another classmate who has interest in adding their touch to the CLASS of 64 Cookbook!  I look forward to your recipes.  Please include any history on the recipes, I think that will add some fun and interest to them.  Take the best of care.  Your classmate, Joe C.

I think the cookbook is a great idea.  Now I just have to figure out what would be good to submit.  By the way, Joe, I made a batch of Jim's Beans a couple of nights ago.  I didn't have any IOWA beef or butter beans, but we still enjoyed the recipe.  I substituted Navy beans plus we topped it off with melted cheese.  Can you say "YUMMY"?  We are wondering who Jim is in "Jim's Beans"... maybe you should rename it "Joe's Beans".

We weren't able to make it back for the barbecue, but sure looked like everyone had a great time.  Maybe this is the way to go instead of a more formal 50th at the Country Club?

Hi Linda, so good to hear from you and, so happy that you have jumped on board with the Class of 64 Cookbook!  I am sure that you have many excellent recipes to contribute!

YUMMY! Good Taste buds speak alike! That is always the first and last word I utter just before taking my first bite, each and every time I whip up some of Jim's beans.  In Arizona about all we have for beef is range fed.  And there is a difference between scrub brush fed beef and corn fed.  When I plan on making this dish I usually go to a place in Apache Junction that sells Iowa beef and that greatly adds to the taste.  I have tried melted cheese on top and it does add to the flavor.  I have also tried Vadalla sweet onions (a little more sweetness) in place of white or brown onions.  I wish I could take the credit for that recipe, but that honor goes to Jim Elledge.  Jim is Daves older brother.  Back in the 70s Jim and I shared an apartment in M.Town and he devoted months on perfecting this dish.  so each and every time I make this YUMMY dish, I am flooded with great memories of those days!

Again, thank you for jumping on board with the Class Cookbook.  I have a good feeling this will be a fun and YUMMY adventure!  Look ing for to your recipes!  I wish you and your family the very best!  Your Classmate, Joe C.

PS!!  I hope you have a GREAT and WONDERFUL BIRTHDAY!!!

Good morning Classmates.  I see that we have had a few classmate visits to the cookbook forum, but none are making a recipe deposit.  Come on Gals open your cookbook and review those recipe treasures that your mom or grandma left you and post them for the cookbook.   AND Guys, you can contribute as well.  Some of you are must be grillmasters, so send in those barbie recipes, we guys and I am sure some classmate gals would love to put some new ideas on the grill!

It's time to start cooking with "Bobby the BOBCAT".  If any classmates know of any artists that can draw a SO COOL picture of Bobbie the BOBCAT in a Chefs outfit, we could perhaps use that on the cookbook cover with the Title of,

" Cookin To The Oldies with the Class of 64 AND, Bobby The BOBCAT"

It would be nice to use the art skills of someone in our class or at least a MHS classmate to create this picture.  However, if we need to go outside I know a few artists that will give it a shot.  Mind you, that the above title and picture ideas are just my ideas.  Please send in your TITLE ideas, PICTURE IDEAS, ARTISTS and OH YES, your RECIPES to fill the COOKBOOK!!

What Say You Classmates?

I will return later with 1 and perhaps 2 of my moms recipes, WILL YOU?

Your Classmate, Joe C

Hi Classmates. We are off to a great start this Tuesday of August 24, THANKS to Linda Sellers Goodwin.  She sent me NOT ONE, BUT TWO great recipes!  The FIRST will grab all you classmates who love corn and, I guess that includes everyone!  And if you don't like corn, which is hard for me to believe, then you are sure to like the cookie recipe!

Linda's FIRST RECIPE is called "CORN BAKE"

INGREDIENTS:

Margarine, Bread Crumbs, Flour, Milk, Canned Whole Corn or Frozen Corn, Eggs

Melt 1 stick of margarine in a 9" square dish and sprinkle with 1/4 cup bread crumbs.

Make a white sauce:  Using a small sauce pan, melt 2 T of margerine and 2 T of flour and mix.  Slowly add 1 cup of milk and stir over medium heat until sauce thickens.

Add a dash of onion, 2 cans of whole corn, drained or 2 1/2 cups of fresh or frozen corn and add 2 beaten eggs.

Mix well and pour on top of bread crumbs.  Bake 30 minutes @ 400 degrees or microwave for 5 minutes until no longer soupy in the middle.

Linda says, "This is my Husband's favorite"!  Whip this GOODIE up for dinner and try on your honey!

Linda's SECOND RECIPE is "Delicious Cookies"

Editor's Note (me) while making this treat, play these OLDIES, CHERRY PIE by Skip & Flip or BROWN SUGAR  by ZZ Top.  Nothing better to get you in that sweet mood, for cooking up this treat!

INGREDIENTS: Margarine, Canola Oil, Brown Sugar, White Sugar, Egg, Vanilla, Coconut Flavoring, butter flavoring, Flour, Baking Soda, Cream of Tarter, Quick Cook Oatmeal, Shredded Oatmeal, Rice Krispies, Chocolate Chips.

Mix togeather and beat well, 1 Cup Margarine, 1 Cup Canola Oil, 1 Cup Brown Sugar, 1 Cup White Sugar, 1 Egg, 2 Tsp. Vanilla, 1 Tsp. Coconut Flavoring, 1/2 Tsp. Butter Flavoring.

ADD 3 1/2 Cups of Flour, 1 Tsp. Baking Soda, 1 Tsp Cream of Tarter, 1 Cup Quick Cook Oatmeal, 1 Cup Shredded Coconut, 1 Cup Rice Krispies, 12 Oz. Package of Chocolate Chips.

Beat well and drop by spoonfulls onto lightly greased cookie sheet.  Bake @ 350 Degrees for 12 to 15 Minutes.  This Recipe makes 6 DOZEN.

Linda states that they like to keep them in the frig and eat them chilled!  A REAL COOL TREAT!   She also said the original recipe states: "You'll think you've died and gone to heaven"

Here you go Classmates, "Some Great Food for thought," of what recipe you will choose to submit! !!!

Again Linda, Thank You!  Your Classmate,  Joe C.

I AM BAAAAAACK with another recipe from Linda Sellers Goodwin. Classmates, This girl is on a roll!

For this next recipe you might wish to Play the "Pina Colada Song" by Rupet Holmes

Linda got this recipe from a restaurant in Orlando Fl.  This restaurant no longer exists, but was located downtown on lake Eola overlooking the city's historic fountain.  Even though the restaurant is no longer, this recipe will linger on!

Lee's Lakeside Pina Colada Muffins

INGREDIENTS:

1  (1Pound 2 Oz) Box Yellow Cake Mix, 1 Tsp. Coconut Flavoring, 1 Tsp. Rum Flavoring, 1 Cup Flaked or Shredded Coconut, 1 Cup Chopped Walnuts, 1 Cup Drained, Crushed Pineapple.

Preheat your oven to 350 Degrees. Grease Muffin Tins or Line with Paper Cups

Prepare Cake Mix Following Cake Mix Directions.  Stir to just combine Ingredients, Being Careful NOT To Overmix Batter.  Fill Each Muffin Cup 3/4 " Full.  Bake for 15 to 20 Minutes or until wooden toothpick inserted in the center of one of the Muffins comes out dry.  This recipe makes about 30 of these cool little guys!

As Linda Says, ENJOY!

Until the next Posting, Joe C
